INTERVIEWYR indicates the year in which the interview was conducted.
While most samples occur within a single calendar year, this variable differs from YEAR as YEAR indicates the year (or first year) of the sample.

This variable is comparable across samples, apart from differences stemming from alternative calendars used in some countries, detailed below. This variable uses the Gregorian calendar.
Comparability — Afghanistan [top]
Some date variables in Afghanistan samples are originally reported in the Shamsi or Solar Hijri calendar, which is a solar calendar approximately 622 years and 9 months behind the Gregorian calendar.
IPUMS has converted months and years to Gregorian algorithmically for Afghanistan 2022, but has not converted day variables, such as INTERVIEWDAY. These remain as the Shamsi calendar day for Afghanistan 2022. INTERVIEWDAY was reported in Gregorian for Afghanistan 2010.
Comparability — Nepal [top]
All standard date variables in Nepal samples are given in the Nepali calendar. The Nepali calendar, or Vikram Samvat, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months of 29 to 32 days each. According to the Gregorian calendar, the Nepali calendar begins in mid-April. Because the 12 months do not match the sidereal year, correctional months are occasionally added or subtracted. The exact date (day, month, year) is needed to convert dates given in Vikram Samvat to the Gregorian calendar. IPUMS has converted the month and year variables to the exact month when the day was available. Otherwise, it is only possible to approximate the month. Vikram Samvat is approximately 56 years, 8 months, and 15 days ahead of the Gregorian calendar.
IPUMS has converted months and years for Nepal samples algorithmically, but has not converted day variables, such as INTERVIEWDAY. These values remain as the Vikram Samvat day.
Comparability — Thailand [top]
Date variables in Thailand samples are reported in the Thai Solar calendar, which is a solar calendar 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. The months and days remain the same between the Gregorian and Thai Solar calendars.
IPUMS has converted the year variables for Thailand samples to Gregorian calendar years.
