Description

BIRTHREG indicates whether the child's birth was registered with the state.

The related variable BIRTHCERT indicates whether the child has a birth certificate.

Comparability

The variable is conceptually consistent across samples, but the universe of respondents varies.

Generally, the question was asked of children without a birth certificate. In earlier samples, the universe includes both children who do not have a birth certificate and those for whom the birth certificate was not seen by the interviewer. More recent samples tighten the universe to only those children without certificates. And some samples ask the question of all children: Mozambique 2009, Zimbabwe 2009, Ghana 2010.
