Description
DISCNEED indicates whether the respondent believes it is necessary to physically punish a child to bring up, raise, or educate the child properly.
If a mother or guardian of a child aged 5-14 in the "Children 5 to 17" unit of analysis had any other children that she was reporting for in the "Children 0-4" units of analysis, her answer would be found on the "Child 0-4" unit of analysis as she only reports her opinion once. A flag variable for this restriction can be found in DISCNEEDCHECK.
Comparability
The respondent of this variable shifts across samples. In the earlier MICS rounds, when the child discipline module was found on the household survey and referred to a single randomly selected child from the household roster, the respondent was the household member responding to the household survey. In Round 6, the mother or primary caregiver of all children age 1 - 4 report answers on the "Children 0-4" unit of analysis. Also in Round 6, the mother or primary caretaker of the child between age 5-14 selected for the "Children 5-17" unit of analysis also are included in this variable.
