Description
EDLEVELDET records the detailed highest level of education attended by the household member. This variable aims to harmonize without losing information within a 3-digit coding structure.
This variable retains country specific detail. The variable EDLEVEL provides a simplified version of education level like the EDLEVEL variables:
EDLEVELMN men (on the men unit of analysis)
EDLEVELMOM mothers (on the household member, children 0-4 and 5-17 units of analysis)
EDLEVELDAD fathers (on the household member unit of analysis).
In many samples, EDGRADE can be used in combination with the level of education to make finer educational determinations. For example, if EDLEVELDET is primary and EDGRADE is 4, the person completed the 4th grade of primary school.

Comparability
The education levels are true to the national education systems and can reflect a different number of years of schooling across countries. The major levels for lower secondary and vocational education are not consistently identified across surveys. In most such cases they are combined with secondary.
