Description

ETHNIC_LA reports the ethnicity of the household head, in broad categories. This variable is specific to Laos.

Comparability

There are changes to the categories across time.

2006 and 2011 consider the categories "Laos", "Khmu", and "Hmong". In 2017, the wording for these same categories is "Lao-Tai", "Mon-Khmer" and "Hmong-Mien". These are harmonized as respective equivalents.

A second variable (ETHNIC_LA2) contains more detailed categories for the head of households in 2011 and 2017. This variable is found only in the household characteristics unit of analysis.
