Comparability
In IPUMS DHS, the variable NEWSBRIG is a bridging variable between differences in question wording between DHS Phases. In DHS Phase 1-3 where respondents were asked whether they read the newspaper at least once a week NEWSWKÂ (V110)). Beginning in DHS Phase 4, respondents were asked how often they read the newspaper (NEWSFQÂ (V159)).
This IPUMS Global Health interoperable variable retains this distinction where the responses, "No, does not usually read the newspaper once a week," "Does not read the newspaper at all," and "Reads the newspaper less than once a week" share a common first digit of 0, with the second digit preserving the detail. Similarly, the responses, "Yes, usually reads the newspaper once a week," "Yes, reads the newspaper at least once a week," and "Yes, reads the newspaper almost every day" share a common first digit of 1, with the second digit distinguishing between these categories.
