Comparability

Materials are grouped broadly into natural, rudimentary and finished. Specific materials are generally classified into these groups consistent with their presentation on the questionnaire for each survey. Because we adhere to the classification of materials in the original surveys into the three major groups, some materials occur in more than one place in the coding structure. This may reflect local nuances in interpretation or in the degree of processing of the materials.

The write-in entries are sometimes ambiguous, but we largely defer to the categorization implied by the codes in the original surveys.
