Description

SAMPLE_STR identifies the survey in which the case was recorded. It is a composite code. The first 2 digits are the country ISO alpha code. The next four digits represent the year of the sample (the first year if the sample was conducted over two years). And the last digit distinguishes between multiple surveys taken in the same country-year. An "a" in the last digit indicates a national sample; other letters indicate subnational samples.

Comparability

SAMPLE_STR is added to the database during processing by IPUMS MICS and has no comparability issues.
