Description

WINDEX10U reports the wealth index score decile for households residing in an urban location. The wealth score is based on ownership of durable goods, housing characteristics, and basic services. A principal component analysis is run on a set of indicator variables for each survey, to yield an inferred wealth level for the household. The method was originally devised by Filmer and Pritchett (2001) and extended by Rutstein et al (2014).

Complimentary variables report discrete wealth score values and wealth scores by quintiles for urban households within each survey sample (WSCOREU, WINDEX5U).

Comparability

Different surveys use different indicator variables in the construction of the wealth score. Scores are therefore unique to each survey but are roughly comparable if interpreted as relative measures of household wealth within each country at a point in time. Users can learn more about sample and unit specific wealth score calculations from the Country Reports.

Scores, quintiles, and deciles are also calculated separately for rural households and all households (WSCORER, WINDEX5R, WINDEX10R, WSCORE, WINDEX5, WINDEX10). Users can also find more information about the specific definition of urban and rural in the variables URBAN.

Comparability — Guyana [top]

Guyana 2019 reports a "Coastal Wealth index" for urban wealth indices and "Interior Wealth index" for rural wealth indices.

Users should note that the wealth deciles for Zimbabwe 2019 may vary across units of analysis.
