Description

STRATUM identifies the sampling stratum for the household. Although stratification is typically based on regional and administrative divisions and urban-rural status, some samples employ a different stratification strategy (see below). For most samples, enumeration areas are selected systematically from each stratum, and clusters are then drawn from those areas.

This variable is generally comparable across samples, with exceptions detailed below. Users are encouraged to consult the relevant survey reports to identify deviations from the typical stratification strategy used in MICS surveys, especially for sub-national surveys.
