Description
EDGRADE reports the highest grade completed within the level of education reported in EDLEVEL (simplified) and EDLEVELDET (detailed).
In many samples, EDGRADE can be used in combination with the level of education to make finer educational determinations. For example, if EDLEVEL is primary and EDGRADE is 4, the person completed the 4th grade of primary school.
The level of education generally does not include early childhood education or preschool education.
Starting with the MICS6 round, there are two separate variables reporting the highest grade attended (EDGRADEATT) and whether the person completed that grade (EDGRADECOMP).

GENERAL |
Comparability
The source data for some surveys report total years of schooling and some report total years within each level. For example, some samples report a grade of 1 and EDLEVEL of secondary to reflect the first year of secondary school while other samples may report a grade of 9 and EDLEVEL of secondary to report 9th grade (the first year of secondary school in some countries). Where possible, EDGRADE converts the original composite codes of surveys that report both level and grade within a level in the coding scheme. Surveys that report the only number of years of total schooling or total number of years that cross multiple levels are indicated below.
Higher codes for EDGRADE record categorical responses.
