Description

GEO1_PS identifies the household's region of residence within Palestine in the 2010 through 2019 MICS surveys. Regions in Palestine are groups of governorates. Governorates are the primary level of geography in Palestine.

The first three digits of GEO1_PS provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Palestine include GEO1_PS2010 and GEO1_PS2014.

Comparability

The geographic units identified in the 2010, 2014, and 2019 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_PS units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The full original detail is retained in GEO1_PS2010, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2010, and GEO1_PS2014, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2014. Codes and boundaries for 2019 are equivalent to GEO1_PS.

For 2019 and GEO1_PS: 16 governorates were grouped into two regions:

• West Bank: Jenin, Tubas, Tulkarm, Nablus, Qalqiliya, Salfit, Ramallah and Al-Bireh, Jericho and Al Aghwar, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron
• Gaza Strip: North Gaza, Gaza, Deir El-Balah, Khan Yunis, Rafah
