Description

FLREADCOMP5 is the result of the fifth reading comprehension question based on the passage the child read in the foundational learning module.

This final question is a test of inferential comprehension. The question is "Why is [name] happy?" and the correct answer is "Because [name] has flowers to give [his/her] mother" or "Because the farmer gave [him/her] flowers". The name of the child in the reading passage is specific to the country and language.

Comparability

This variable is generally comparable across samples. Some of the samples change the words "farmer" or "flowers" in the story to be a geographically relevant person and plant.

Some apparent discrepancies in the universe of respondents may be due to children within the same sample reading stories in different languages. For countries that provide reading booklets in multiple languages, this variable represents the child's first chosen language or the language the child most often speaks at school or at home.
