Description
GEO1ALT_GN identifies the household's natural region of residence within Guinea in the 2016 MICS survey.
Although the natural regions in Guinea do not correspond to any level of administrative geography, each natural region includes certain prefectures that are the secondary administrative divisions in Guinea. Below, is a list of the natural regions and their corresponding prefectures:
- Basse Guinée: Boffa, Boké, Coyah, Dubréka, Forécariah, Fria, Kindia, Télimélé
- Moyenne Guinée: Dalaba, Gaoual, Koubia, Koundara, Labé, Lélouma, Mali, Mamou, Pita, Tougué
- Haute Guinée: Dabola, Dinguiraye, Faranah, Kankan, Kérouané, Kouroussa, Mandiana, Siguiri
- Guinée Forestière: Beyla, Guéckédou, Kissidougou, Lola, Macenta, Nzérékoré, Yomou
- Conakry: Conakry
The first three digits of GEO1ALT_GN provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Guinea include GEO1_GN, which provides the household's region of residence.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1ALT_N is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
