Description
GEO1_AF identifies the household's region of residence within Afghanistan in the all MICS surveys.
The regions in Afghanistan do not correspond to any level of administrative geography, but they are composed of provinces, which are the primary administrative divisions in Afghanistan. The regions and their corresponding provinces are listed below:
- Central: Kabul, Kapisa, Parwan, Wardak, Logar, Panjsher
- Central Highlands: Bamyan Daikundi
- East: Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman Nooristan
- North: Samangan, Sar-e-Pul, Balkh, Jawzjan, Faryab
- North East: Baghlan, Takhar, Badakhshan, Kunduz
- South: Uruzgan, Helmand, Zabul, Nimroz, Kandahar
- South East: Ghazni, Paktya, Paktika, Khost
- West: Ghor, Herat, Badghis, Farah
The first three digits of GEO1_AF provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Afghanistan include GEO1_AF2022.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_AF is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
