Description

GEO1_AR identifies the household's region of residence within Argentina in the 2011 and the 2019 MICS surveys. Regions in Argentina are groups of provinces. Provinces are the primary level of geography in Argentina.

The first three digits of GEO1_AR provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Argentina include GEO1_AR2011 and GEO1_AR2019.

Comparability

The geographic units identified in the 2011 and the 2019 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_AR units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The 2019 survey separately identifies Pampas and Buenos Aires province exclusive of Buenos Aires city. Those units are combined in GEO1_AR for consistency with the 2011 survey geography. The full original detail is retained in GEO1_AR2011, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2011, and GEO1_AR2019, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2019.

For 2011: 24 provinces were grouped into six regions:

  • Greater Buenos Aires (GBA)
  • Cuyo: San Juan, San Luis, Mendoza
  • Northeast (NEA): Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, Misiones
  • Northwest (NOA): Jujuy, Salta, Santiago del Estero, Tucuman, Catamarca, La Rioja,
  • Pampeana: Buenos Aires province, La Pampa, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rios
  • Patagonia: Neuquén, Santa Cruz, Tierra del Fuego, Chubut, Río Negro
For 2019: 24 provinces were grouped into seven regions:

  • Greater Buenos Aires (GBA)
  • Buenos Aires province
  • Cuyo: San Juan, San Luis, Mendoza
  • Northeast (NEA): Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, Misiones
