Description

GEO1_CD identifies the household's province and neutral city of residence within the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2010 and 2017 MICS surveys. Provinces are the primary level of geography in Democratic Republic of Congo.

The first three digits of GEO1_CD provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Democratic Republic of Congo include GEO1_CD2010 and GEO1_CD2017.

Comparability

The geographic units identified in the 2010 and the 2017 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_CD have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across the Democratic Republic of Congo. In practice, this entails aggregating the more detailed 2017 geographies to equate them with the 2010 units. GEO1_CD2010 provides the original codes and boundaries for 2010 and GEO1_CD2017 provides the codes and boundaries for 2017.

In 2010 the Democratic Republic of Congo was divided into ten provinces and one neutral city. In 2015, the ten provinces were reorganized into 25 provinces and one neutral city. The changes in boundaries are listed below.

  • Bandundu was broken up to form three separate provinces, Kwango, Kwilu, and Maïndombe
  • Équateur was broken up to form five separate provinces, Équateur, Mongala, Nord Ubangi, Sud Ubangi, Tshuapa
  • Province Orientale split into four provinces, Bas Uélé, Haut Uélé, Ituri, Tshopo
  • Katanga split into four provinces, Haut Katanga, Haut Lomami, Lualaba, Tanganyika
  • Kasai Oriental split to form three provinces of Kasaï Oriental, Lomami, Sankuru
  • Kasai Occidental split to form two provinces Kasaï, Kasaï Central
  • There were no changes to the boundaries of Kinshasa, Kongo Central, Nord Kivu, Maniema, Sud-Kivu
