Description

GEO1_DZ identifies the household's territorial programming region of residence within Algeria in the 2012 and 2018 MICS surveys.

The territorial programming regions correspond to areas outlined by Le Schéma National d’Aménagement du Territoire (SNAT), and do not correspond to any level of administrative geography. The SNAT identifies nine territorial programming regions. The three southern regions (Sud-Ouest, Sud-Est, Grand-Sud) are grouped together into one "South" Region to provide representative data. Each region is composed of wilayas, which are the primary administrative divisions in Algeria. The regions and corresponding wilayas are listed below:

  • North Center: Alger, Blida, Boumerdès, Tipaza, Bouira, Médéa, Tizi-Ouzou, Béjaïa, Chlef, Ain Defla
  • North East: Annaba, Constantine, Skikda, Jijel, Mila, Souk Ahras, El Tarf, Guelma
  • North West: Oran, Tlemcen, Mostaganem, Ain Témouchent, Relizane, Sidi Bel Abbés, Mascara
  • Haut Plateau Center: Djelfa, Laghouat, M'Sila
  • Haut Plateau East: Sétif, Batna, Khenchela, Bordj Bou Arréridj, Oum El Bouaghi, Tébessa
  • Haut Pleateau West: Tiaret, Saïda. Tissemsilt, Naâma, El Bayadh
  • Sud-Ouest, Sud-Est, Grand-Sud (South): Béchar, Tindouf, Adrar, Ghardaïa, Biskra, El Oued, Tamanrasset, Illizi

The first three digits of GEO1_DZ provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_DZ is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

The regions have identical spatial footprints in both samples; there are no comparability issues.
