Description

GEO1_GE identifies the household's region or autonomous republic of residence within the Georgia in the 2005 and 2018 MICS surveys. Regions are the primary level of geography in Georgia.

The first three digits of GEO1_GE provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Georgia include GEO1_GE2005 and GEO1_GE2018.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_GE is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

The units in the 2005 and 2018 samples have different spatial footprints. The geographies in GEO1_GE have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The original geographic units are available in GEO1_GE2005, which provides codes and boundaries for 2005, and GEO1_GE2018, which provides codes and boundaries for 2018.

In 2005, Georgia was divided into ten regions and two autonomous republics. In 2018 the region of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti were combined with the Imereti region.

In all surveys, Abkhazia Autonomous Republic and the area of South Ossetia are not sampled.
