Codes and Frequencies
Description
GEO1_KG identifies the household's region of residence within Kyrgyzstan in the 2005 through 2018 MICS surveys. Regions are the primary level of geography in Kyrgyzstan.
The first three digits of GEO1_KG provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Kyrgyzstan include GEO1_KG2005, GEO1_KG2014, and GEO1_KG2018.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_KG is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
Comparability
The geographic units identified in the 2005 through 2018 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_KG units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The full original detail is retained GEO1_KG2005, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2005, GEO1_KG2014, which provides codes and boundaries for 2014, and GEO1_CD2018, which provides codes and boundaries for 2018.
In 2005, Kyrgyzstan was divided into eight regions. After 2005, the number of regions increased to nine. The changes in boundaries are listed below.
