Description

GEO1_LA2006 identifies the household's region of residence within Laos in the 2006 MICS survey. Regions in Laos are groups of provinces. Provinces are the primary level of geography in Laos.

The first three digits of GEO1_LA2006 provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Laos include the spatiotemporally harmonized GEO1_LA that applies to the 2011 and 2017 surveys, the sample-specific GEO1_LA2011, that applies to the 2011 survey, and GEO1_LA2017 that applies to the 2017 survey.

Comparability

For 2006: 18 provinces were grouped into three regions:

  • North: Phongsaly, Luangnamtha, Oudomxay, Bokeo, Luangprabang, Huaphanh, Xayabury, Xiengkhuang
  • Central: Vientiane Capital, Vientiane, Borikhamxay, Xaysomboune, Khammuane, Savannakhet
  • South: Saravane, Sekong, Champasack, Attapeu
