Description

GEO1_MW2006 identifies the household's district of residence within Malawi in the 2006 MICS survey. Districts are the primary level of geography in Malawi.

The first three digits of GEO1_MW2006 provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Malawi include the spatiotemporally harmonized GEO1_MW that applies to all Malawi samples, and the sample-specific GEO1_MW2013, that applies to the 2013 survey, and GEO1_MW2019, that applies to the 2019 survey.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_MW2006 is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

In the 2006 survey, the district of Likoma was too small to draw 1,200 households out of the total available households. Therefore, the population of Likoma was merged with Nkhata Bay district. In the Southern Region, Neno district was part of Mwanza district as per the census frame used for sample selection. Therefore, Neno was not considered as a separate district, but rather was merged with Mwanza.
