Description

GEO1_TN identifies the household's region of residence within Tunisia in the 2011 and 2018 MICS surveys. Regions in Tunisia are groups of governorates. Governorates are the primary level of geography in Tunisia.

The first three digits of GEO1_TN provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Tunisia include GEO1_TN2011 and GEO1_TN2018.

Comparability

The geographic units identified in the 2011 and the 2018 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_TN units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The full original detail is retained in GEO1_TN2011, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2011, and GEO1_TN2018, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2018.

For 2011: 24 governorates were grouped into nine regions:

• District Tunis: Manouba, Tunis
• Nord Est: Bizerte, Nabeul, Zaghouan
• Nord Ouest: Béja, Jendouba, Kef, Siliana
• Centre Est: Mahdia, Monastir, Sfax, Sousse
• Center Ouest: Kasserine Governorate
• Center Ouest: Kairouan Governorate
• Center Ouest: Sidi Bouzid Governorate
• Sud Est: Gabes, Mednine, Tataouine
• Sud Ouest: Gafsa, Kebili, Tozeur

• District Tunis: Manouba, Tunis
• Nord Est: Bizerte, Nabeul, Zaghouan
