Description

GEO1_UZ identifies the household's geo-economical region of residence within Uzbekistan in the 2006 and 2021 MICS surveys. The geo-economical regions in Uzbekistan do not correspond to any level of administrative geography, but they are composed of oblasts/republic that are the primary administrative divisions in Uzbekistan. Below, are the geo-economical regions and the corresponding oblasts/republic:

  • Western: Republic of Karakalpakstan, Khorezm oblast
  • Central: Bukhara, Navoi, Samarkhand oblasts
  • Southern: Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya oblasts
  • Central-Eastern: Jjizzakh, Syrdarya, Taskentskaya oblasts
  • Eastern: Andizhan, Namangan, Fergana oblasts
  • Tashkent city

The first three digits of GEO1_UZ provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_UZ is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
