Description
GEO1_WS identifies the household's region of residence within Samoa in the 2019 MICS survey.
Although the regions in Samoa do not correspond to any level of administrative geography, each region is composed of districts or constituencies, which are the primary and secondary administrative divisions in Samoa respectively. Below, are the regions and their corresponding districts or constituencies:
- Apia Urban Area: Faleata East and Vaimauga West constituencies of Tuamasaga district
- Northwest Upolu: Faleata West, Sagaga le Falefa, Sagaga le Usoga, Vaimauga East constituencies of Tuamasaga district, Le'auva'a constituency of Gaga'emauga district, Aana Alofi I, Aana Alofi II, Aana Alofi III constituencies of A'ana district
- Rest of Upolu: Aiga-i-le-Tai district, Atua district, Va'a-o-Fonoti district, Safata and Siumu constituencies of Tuamasaga district, Salamumu constituency of Gaga'emauga district, Falelatai and Samatau, and Legaga and Faleseela constituencies of A'ana district
- Savaii: Fa'asaleleaga district, Gaga'ifomauga district, Vaisigano district, Satupa'itea district, Palauli district, Rest of Gaga'emauga district
The first three digits of GEO1_WS provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_WS is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
