Codes and Frequencies
Description
GEO1_MR identifies the household's wilaya of residence within Mauritania in the 2007 through 2015 MICS surveys. Wilayas are the primary level of geography in Mauritania.
The first three digits of GEO1_MR provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Mauritania include GEO1_MR2007, GEO1_MR2011, and GEO1_MR2015.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_MR is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
Comparability
The 2007, 2011, and 2015 samples have different spatial footprints. GEO1_MR has been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The original detail is retained in three variables: GEO1_MR2007 provides the codes and boundaries for 2007, GEO1_MR2011 provides codes and boundaries for 2011, and GEO1_MR2015 provides codes and boundaries for 2015.
In 2011, the two wilayas of Tirs-Ezemour and Inchiri were combined in the sample design.
