Description

GEO1_RS identifies the household's statistical region of residence within Serbia in the 2010 to 2019 MICS surveys. Statistical regions in Serbia are groups of districts. Districts are the primary level of geography in Serbia.

MICS also conducted a survey on a sample of Roma households in 2010, 2014, and 2019; however, Roma households in Serbia are not included in GEO1_RS, as they are not representative at the statistical region level. Roma households for Serbia are integrated in URBAN.

The regions and their corresponding provinces are listed below:

  • Vojvodina: Central Banat, North Bačka, North Banat, South Bačka, South Banat, Srem, West Bačka
  • Belgrade: Belgrade
  • Sumadija and Western Serbia (part of Central Serbia without Belgrade): Kolubara, Mačva, Moravica, Pomoravlje, Rasina, Raška, Šumadija, Zlatibor
  • Southern and Eastern Serbia (part of Central Serbia without Belgrade): Bor, Braničevo, Jablanica, Nišava, Pčinja, Pirot, Podunavlje, Toplica, Zaječar

The first three digits of GEO1_RS provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Serbia include GEO1_RS2005.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_RS is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

The 2005 MICS survey is not included in GEO1_RS. The full original detail is retained in GEO1_RS2005, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2005.

The geographic units in the 2010 to 2019 MICS samples have identical spatial footprints.

The disputed territory of Kosovo is not included in the Serbia MICS surveys. Separate MICS samples were produced for Kosovo in 2013 and 2019.
