Codes and Frequencies
Description
GEO1_SO identifies the household's zone of residence within Somalia in the 2006 and 2011 MICS surveys. Zones in Somalia are groups of regions. Regions are the primary level of geography in Somalia.
Below are the zones and their corresponding regions:
- Northwest/Somaliland: Maroodijeex/Saaxil, Awdal, Togdheer, Sool, Sanaag
- Northeast/Puntland: Bari, Nugal, Mudug
- Central South: Galgaduud, Hiraan, Middle Shabelle, Lower Shabelle, Banaadir, Bay, Bakool, Gedo, Middle Juba, Lower Juba
The first three digits of GEO1_SO provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Somalia include GEO2_SO2011, which identifies administrative regions within the sampled zones for that survey.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_SO is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and country can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
