Description

GEO1_BZ identifies the household's district of residence within Belize in the 2006 to 2015 MICS surveys. Districts are the primary level of geography in Belize.

The first three digits of GEO1_BZ provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Belize include GEO1_BZ2006, GEO1_BZ2011, and GEO1_BZ2015.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_BZ is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

The 2006, 2011, and the 2015 samples have different spatial footprints. GEO1_BZ units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. In 2006, Belize was divided into six districts. In 2011 and 2015, the South Side of Belize City was identified separately from Belize district. These units are combined in GEO1_BZ.

The full original detail is retained in GEO1_BZ2006, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2006, GEO1_BZ2011, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2011, and GEO1_BZ2015, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2015.
