Description

GEO1_GY identifies the household's region of residence within Guyana in the 2006 through 2019 MICS surveys. Regions are the primary level of geography in Guyana.

The first three digits of GEO1_GY provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Guyana include GEO1_GY2006, GEO1_GY2014, GEO1_GY2019, and GEO1ALT_GY.

Comparability

The geographic units identified in the 2006, 2014, and 2019 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_GY units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The full original detail is retained in GEO1_GY2006, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2006, GEO1_GY2014, which provides codes and boundaries for 2014, and GEO1_GY2019, which provides codes and boundaries for 2019.

For 2006: 10 districts were grouped into five regions:

  • Region 1, 7, 8, 9 - Barima-Waini, Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Potaro-Siparuni, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo
  • Region 2, 3 - Pomeroon-Supenaam, Essequibo Islands, West Demerara
  • Region 5, 6 - Mahaica-Berbice, East Berbice-Corentyne
  • Region 4 - Demerara-Mahaica
  • Region 10 - Upper Demerara-Berbice
For 2014: Regions 7, 8 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Potaro-Siparuni) were grouped together.
