Description

GEO1_KE identifies the household's province within Kenya in the 2006 through 2013 MICS surveys. Provinces are the first-level administrative units of the country. Only selected areas of the country are included in the MICS surveys; see the comparability section for more details.

The first three digits of GEO1_KE provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Kenya include GEO2_KE.

Comparability

Only selected districts of the country are included in each MICS survey, by design. Several provinces in their entirety are not included in any survey. There are three separate MICS datasets in 2013: one corresponding to each sampled district.

• 2009: Mombasa from the Central province is included in the 2009 survey
• 2011: Selected districts from Nyanza province included in the 2011 survey
• 2013: Bungoma and Kakamega from the Western province and Turkana from Rift Valley province are included in the 2013 survey. There are three separate 2013 datasets, each corresponding to one district.
• The entire provinces of Nairobi, Central, Eastern, and Northeastern are not part of any MICS survey
