Description

GEO2_KE identifies the household's district within Kenya in the 2006 through 2013 MICS surveys. Districts are the second level administrative units of the country. Only selected areas of the country have been included in the MICS surveys, see the comparability section for more details.

The first three digits of GEO1_KE provide the country code; the second three digits provides the higher-level units within which the second level units exist, and the last three digits specify the second level geographic unit within Kenya. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Kenya include GEO1_KE.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO2_KE is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and country can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

Note that only selected regions of the country have been included in the MICS surveys. Only a few districts are included any survey. There are three separate MICS datasets in 2013: one corresponding to each sampled district.

  • 2009: Mombasa district from the Central province is included in the 2009 survey
  • 2011: Selected districts from Nyanza province included in the 2011 survey
  • 2013: Bungoma and Kakamega districts from the Western province and Turkana district from Rift Valley province included in the 2013 survey. Each district is its own dataset.
  • The entire provinces of Nairobi, Central, Eastern, and Northeastern are not part of any MICS survey
