Description

GEO1_ST identifies the household's region of residence within São Tomé and Príncipe in the 2014 and 2019 MICS surveys. Regions in São Tomé and Príncipe are groups of districts. Districts are the primary level of geography in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The first three digits of GEO1_ST provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for São Tomé and Príncipe include GEO1_ST2014 and GEO1_ST2019.

Comparability

The geographic units identified in the 2014 and the 2019 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_ST units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. The full original detail is retained in GEO1_ST2014, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2014, and GEO1_ST2019, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2019.

For 2014: 6 districts and 1 autonomous region were grouped into four regions:

  • Região Centro Este: Água Grande, Mé-Zóchi
  • Região Norte Oeste: Lembá, Lobata
  • Região Sul Este: Cantagalo, Caué
  • Autonomous Region of Príncipe
For 2019: 6 districts and 1 autonomous region were grouped into five regions:

  • Distrito de Água Grande
  • Distrito de Mé-Zóchi
  • Região Norte Oeste: Lembá, Lobata
  • Região Sul Este: Cantagalo, Caué
  • Região Autonoma de Principe
