Codes and Frequencies
Description
GEO1_TD identifies the household's province of residence within Chad in the 2010 and 2019 MICS surveys. Provinces are the primary level of geography in Chad.
The first three digits of GEO1_TD provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Democratic Republic of Congo includes GEO1_TD2010 and GEO1_TD2019.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_CD is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
Comparability
The 2010 and the 2019 samples have different spatial footprints. GEO1_TD have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across Chad surveys. GEO1_TD2010 provides the codes and boundaries for 2010 and GEO1_TD2019 provides the codes and boundaries from 2019.
In 2019, Ennedi region was split into Ennedi Est and Ennedi Ouest regions.
The former BET (Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti) region was separated into Borkou, Ennedi, and Tibesti in 2008. However, due to insecurity and flooding, Borkou, Ennedi, and Tibesti were grouped together to provide representative data in the 2010 sample. In the 2019 sample, the provinces of Borkou and Tibesti were grouped into one region while Ennedi Est and Ennedi Ouest regions were surveyed separately.
