Description

GEO2_MN identifies the household's province or district of residence within Mongolia in the 2012 through 2018 MICS surveys. Provinces are the primary level of geography in Mongolia, while districts are the secondary level of geography.

The first three digits of GEO2_MN provide the country code; the fourth digit provides the region code from GEO1_MN; the remainder of the digits specify the province and the district code. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Mongolia include GEO1_MN, GEO1ALT_MN, and GEO3_MN.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO2_MN is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and country can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

GEO2_MN provides the second and sometimes very low-level geographical information for Mongolia. Mongolia is divided into regions (GEO1_MN) that are in turn divided into provinces and the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. For the 2012 and 2016 samples, GEO2_MN represents the Khuvsgal district in Khangai region.

  • For the 2012b sample: The survey is representative at the Khuvsgul district (Khangai region)
  • For the 2016b sample: The survey is representative at the Khuvsgul district (Khangai region) plus certain unmappable regions within the district - Central, Tourism, Agriculture, Ider, Tes-Ekh, and Murun.
  • For the 2018 sample, 6 provinces and 2 districts of Ulaanbaatar were selected to be resampled, in order to provide representative data for these Target Areas. These areas are:
  • Western Region: Zavkhan, Govo-Altai, and Bayan-Ulgii provinces
  • Khangai Region: Bayankhongor and Khuvsgul provinces
  • Central Region: Umnugovi province
  • Eastern Region: none
  • Ulaanbaatar: Nalaikh and Bayanzurkh districts
