Description

GEO1_NP identifies the household's development region of residence within Nepal in the 2010 and 2014 MICS surveys. The five development regions were the primary level of geography in Nepal prior to 2015. Each development region is further subdivided into mountain, hill, and tarai (lowland) areas, making 15 subdivisions in total.

The 2019 survey is not included in GEO1_NP, because administrative areas in Nepal were reorganized into seven regions based on the new constitution.

The first three digits of GEO1_NP provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Nepal include GEO1_NP2010, GEO1_NP2014, and GEO1ALT_NP.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_NP is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

The boundaries for the 2010 and 2014 surveys differ from the 2019 survey. GEO1_NP2010 provides the codes and boundaries for 2010, GEO1_NP2014 provides the codes and boundaries for 2014, and GEO1ALT_NP provides the codes and boundaries from 2019.

The 2010 survey is only available for six subdivisions (two regions) in western Nepal. The 2014 and 2019 MICS surveys include all areas of Nepal.
