Codes and Frequencies
Description
GEO1_NP2014 identifies the household's development region of residence within Nepal in the 2014 MICS surveys. The five development regions were the primary level of geography in Nepal prior to 2015. Each development region is further subdivided into mountain, hill, and tarai (lowland) areas, making 15 subdivisions in total.
The first three digits of GEO1_NP2014 provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Nepal include the spatiotemporally harmonized GEO1_NP that applies to the 2010 and 2014 Nepal samples, the sample-specific GEO1_NP2010 that applies to the 2010 survey, and the sample-specific GEO1ALT_NP that applies to the 2019 survey.
A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_NP2014 is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.
