Description

GEO2_PK identifies the household's district of residence within Pakistan in the 2010 through 2019 MICS surveys. Districts are the third administrative level of geography in Pakistan, after provinces and divisions.

The first six digits of GEO2_PK provide the codes for GEO1_PK; the last three digits specifies the district code within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Pakistan include the spatiotemporally harmonized division variable GEO1_PK, and the province specific variables which specify boundaries in the individual surveys. Below we list the provinces and the specific variables for the provinces.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO2_PK is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and countries can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

Each MICS survey surveyed a separate province (first administrative level) of Pakistan and not all provinces were surveyed in the 2010 through 2019 surveys. Below we list the provinces and the survey years for the provinces.

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 2016, 2019
  • Federally Administered Tribal Areas: 2019
  • Punjab: 2011, 2014, 2017
  • Sindh: 2014, 2018
  • Balochistan: 2010, 2019
  • Islamabad: Not surveyed
  • Gilgit-Baltistan: 2016
  • Azad Jammu and Kashmir: Not surveyed

GEO2_PK has been spatiotemporally harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across all the Pakistan surveys. Note that not all survey years will have values associated with the unit. The changes in boundaries are listed below.

Balochistan: Quetta Zarghoon Town and Quetta Chilton Town were merged to form Quetta; Sohbatpur split from Jafarabad; and Lehri split from Bolan.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA): The Federally Administered Tribal Areas was merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018. North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Kuram, Orakzai, Khyber, Bajor, and Mohmind districts (also known as tribal agencies) were added as a result.
Sindh: Saheed Benazirabad was formed from parts of Sukkur and Mirpur Khas; and Karachi Korangi was formed from parts of Karachi East.
