Description

GEO1_CF identifies the household's region of residence within the Central African Republic in the 2006 to 2018 MICS surveys. Regions in the Central African Republic are groups of prefectures. Prefectures are the primary level of geography in the Central African Republic.

The first three digits of GEO1_CF provide the country code; the last three digits specify the geographic unit within the country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country requires less than a three-digit code. Other geography variables for Central African Republic include GEO1_CF2006, GEO1_CF2010, and GEO1_CF2018.

A GIS map (in shapefile format) corresponding to GEO1_CF is available on the GIS Boundary files page. The full set of geography variables for all MICS samples and country can be found at IPUMS MICS Geography.

Comparability

The geographic units identified in the 2006, 2010 and the 2018 surveys have different spatial footprints. GEO1_CF units have been harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across survey years. In practice, the units in the earlier surveys are aggregated to equate with the most recent one. The full original detail is retained in GEO1_CF2006, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2006, GEO1_CF2010, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2010, and GEO1_CF2018, which provides the codes and boundaries for 2018.

In the 2006 survey, Vakaga prefecture was not sampled, and in the 2010 and 2018 surveys, Vakaga prefecture was sampled lightly due to conflict. In the 2010 survey Vakaga prefecture is not representative.
